Gordon has been piping since the age of eight. At that time his instructor was the double gold medallist, Kenneth Macdonald. Gordon was then instructed by Duncan Johnstone and joined the Knightswood Juvenile Pipe Band under the direction of Pipe Major Donald Black and Gary Smith. During that time Gordon won various prizes in the novice juvenile grade and in junior solo piping competitions.

In 1992 Gordon joined the Glasgow Skye Association Pipe Band under Pipe Major Kenneth Macleod. The highlight of this time was gaining sixth place in Grade 1 at the British championships in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, plus winning the Inverchapel Trophy for Pibroch at the Cowal Games and the Craigmount Competition.

2004 saw Gordon join the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band and won numerous major championships with the band culminating in the 2006 and 2007 World Pipe Band Championships.

During the course of Gordon's piping career he's won the B grade events at the Argyllshire Gathering and runner up at the northern meeting in the same year. In 2004 he won the silver medal for pibroch at the Argyllshire Gathering and the Dunrobin Castle Piping Championships. In 2006, Gordon won numerous first places both in MSR and pibroch round the games culminating in the A grade march at the Argyllshire Gathering.

In 2007 Gordon again was one of the most consistent prize winners round the highland games circuit winning both the MSR and pibroch events at Blair Athol, Markinch and Killin Highland Games. Currently, Gordon is being tutored in Pibroch by Walter Drysdale and in light music by Pipe Major Ian Maclellan.
