Since enlisting as a junior bagpiper in 1977 Gavin has had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (the band that made the original bagpipe recording of Amazing Grace and Highland Cathedral). He has also served 15 years with His Majesty the Sultan of Oman in his Royal Guard 2nd Band Squadron, as Pipe Major (Pipes and Drums).
As his next assignment in 1993, at the command of His Majesty the Sultan, he was tasked with forming the Royal Guard Mounted Pipe Band 3rd band Squadron. He formed the mounted band from scratch, from young men who neither read nor wrote English, had no knowledge of music or Highland Bagpipes and were unable to ride horses! Within one year, the mounted pipe band paraded before H.M Sultan Quaboos Bin Said and the nation, with a fully balanced band of 38 pipes and drums which included 2 drum horses.
Pipe Major Gavin Moffat is a very experienced teacher and performer. He has much knowledge in massed band displays and public concerts in many countries of the world. His long experience in Oman, living and working in a Muslim country gave him a great understanding of the world of Islam, its culture and language.
He has a kind amd warm nature and an infectious sense of humour.
